Clean Conscience

1 Peter 3:21

And that water is a picture of baptism, which now saves you, not by removing dirt from your body, but as a response to God from a clean conscience. It is effective because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Series: Significance of Water Baptism

We’ve been studying about baptism and how baptism symbolizes dying to our old self and rising to newness of life, just like Jesus died on the cross for our sins and was resurrected to a new and glorious form.

  • The above verse tells us another aspect of baptism – It gives us a clean conscience. Be careful to not let your conscience become so hard that it does not convict you of your sins any more.
  • If you have just received Jesus and are going to get baptised, you will get a fresh clean slate when you get baptized. You can retrain this clean conscience God gives you so that it is in accordance with God’s desires and purposes.
  • When you hear from God’s word through the Bible or through podcasts and sermons, you train your conscience. The more you train your conscience, the more it will respond in the correct way when faced with temptations and lead you to take the direction that honors God. When your conscience is dead, you will be in utter dilemma.

The waters of baptism don’t just physically remove dirt, it gives you a brand new clean conscience. If you have not received that yet, the first step is to receive Jesus Christ into your life and let His blood wash away your past sins. Then get baptized in the water and when you do so, you will get a fresh conscience. God will then give you the Holy Spirit who gives you fresh new strength and brings about a revival of your heart.
