Obedience Beyond Expectations

Jan 25, 2019 | Discipleship

Philemon 1:21 NLT
I am confident as I write this letter that you will do what I ask and even more!

Apostle Paul writes to Philemon (his spiritual son) instructing on receiving back his bond servant Onesimus.
The letter ends with a signature and an expectation which is mentioned in verse 21.

These were the expectations mentioned by Apostle Paul for Philemon:

1. Forgiveness towards Onesimus.
2. Any debt/money owed (to be charged to Paul’s account).
3. Receive Onesimus as a brother because of his belief in Jesus and not as bond servant any more.

Paul goes on to say that these are few instructions that would refresh his heart and ends the letter stating the verse 21: I am confident as I write this letter that you will do what I ask and even more!

Can our leaders say the same about us? Can God find the same level of submission and obedience and our willingness to listen to our pastors and leaders when they give instructions?

Can leaders say the same about a person, that he/she is extremely reliable, if he/she is asked to do something, not only they are willing to do it, but, do even more?

What is special about obeying leaders?

The leaders placed over our lives are channelized with God’s heart, through whom a blessing would abound in our life.

A simple example of apostle Paul’s conversion experience. Paul had an encounter with Jesus. Jesus asked Paul why are you persecuting Me?

Though Paul could see and hear Jesus, He asked Paul to wait for Ananias to pray and baptize him and give him instructions. Jesus was waiting to see if Paul would submit to Ananias (who wasn’t a religious teacher or scholar) whether he was willing to learn under him and get baptized and obey instructions for the next phase. That determined if Paul would get blessed.

The Bible clearly mentions 1 Peter 5:6 – So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time He will lift you up in honor.

Can you be encouraged today to humble yourself under your leaders and pastors, that there would be absolutely nothing that you will hold back from obeying them? Can you go an extra mile in obeying your leaders that they have a testimony about you, of doing even more?

May the spirit of obedience come upon you today! Let God open your eyes to these instructions and may you have the grace to obey your leaders and let God have His way.

Father, we pray that Philemon 1:21 will be a reality for all of us. Our leaders would find us to do not just what they’ve told us to do but even more and we will learn and be submissive and do whatever it takes to grow into the fullness of what you are doing in our lives, Amen!
