Taking Righteousness for Granted

Oct 17, 2018 | Evangelism

Ezekiel 33:13 NLT
When I tell righteous people that they will live, but then they sin, expecting their past righteousness to save them, then none of their righteous acts will be remembered. I will destroy them for their sins.

In Ezekiel 33:13, God is speaking to the people in the Old Testament. The fundamentals of dealing with sin may be completely different in the New Testament, however, the principles are still the same. God says there are people who have been washed by the blood of Jesus, made righteous and received the promise of prosperity and eternal life. Yet, they take for granted the righteousness God has given.

We begin to think that we have served God long enough and we can now take things lightly and God will ignore our wrongdoings. This causes us to fall into sins. It’s not because we don’t have the wisdom to know what’s right and wrong – It’s because we stop valuing the righteousness we have been given. We forget that Jesus had to die a painful death for our sins and rise again. Every time we take this righteousness for granted, we end up making mistakes and dishonoring the righteousness God has put inside of us.

In Ezekiel 33:13, God says if they take the righteousness for granted and are not careful with their next steps, then their righteous acts will not be remembered. Jesus talks about the man who was forgiven a big debt and later his forgiveness was cancelled because the man wouldn’t forgive another person who owed him. Paul talks about amazing leaders in the faith who were corrupted because of position, money and pride.

This morning I invite you back into the place where you admire the righteousness of Jesus. If you’ve never invited Jesus into your heart, this morning may be the perfect time to do that. If you’ve walked away from Him, this morning may be the perfect time for you to come back to Him. Just pour out your heart to Him.

Prayer:
Jesus, I’ve gone astray but this morning I want to give my life to following You. Fill me with a fresh love and devotion to what You have done for me on the cross. Help me to receive Your forgiveness once again and value what You did for my sake.

If you’re praying this prayer, the Lord will open up heaven over you. Pray your heart out to Him and ask Him to come and make you a new person once again.
