Mar 15, 2018 | Podcast, Prayer

1 Corinthians 14:14-15

“For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying.
Well then, what shall I do? I will pray in the spirit, and I will also pray in words I understand. I will sing in the spirit, and I will also sing in words I understand.”

Series: Pray in the Holy Ghost

We have been studying on the topic of praying in the Holy Spirit and how important it is to depend on the Holy Spirt while praying.

Today we will study from 1 Corinthians 14:14-15

In the 1st century church, something powerful happened, the Holy Spirit was poured out on people and they started speaking in tongues and they were not able to understand what they were speaking.

You can pray in tongues or speak in tongues. When you are speaking in tongues you are speaking on behalf of God. Either you interpret it or you ask someone else who has the gift of interpretation to interpret it. But on the other hand, praying in tongues doesn’t need interpretation. It’s between your spirit and God’s Spirit. When you pray in tongues you edify yourself.

In 1 Corinthians 14:14-15 Apostle Paul says – “For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying.
Well then, what shall I do? I will pray in the spirit, and I will also pray in words I understand. I will sing in the spirit, and I will also sing in words I understand.”

The challenge that many people face while praying in tongues is that they don’t understand what they are praying. This doesn’t mean that Apostle Paul is asking to stop praying in tongues. In fact he says that he prays and sings in the spirit.

In other words what Apostle Paul is saying is that this prayer in not from his head or book knowledge, but it is from the Spirit of God and this kind of prayer brings a lot of fruit and glory to God. Because when you are praying in the spirit you are praying the heart of God. When you are praying in the spirit that demons around you don’t understand, you are praying from God’s perspective and nobody can bring negativity against those prayers.

If you don’t have the gift of praying in tongues, all you need to do is ask the Holy Spirit to fill you on a daily basis. Sooner or later you will see the Holy Spirit inside you will begin to overflow. When your heart is filled with the Holy Spirit your mouth will begin to speak on behalf of the Holy Spirit because the bible says “out of the abundance of your heart your mouth speaks”.

If you want to receive the gift of tongues, go to your prayer closet and ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with the ability to pray in the spirit, it will be beautiful when He actually does fill you with the same.
